In this paper, thirteen novel silver sulfonate complexes containing neutral ligands, whichhave never been reported previously, were synthesized. This article represents a systematicalexamination of the structures of the silver(I) sulfonates incorporating neutral ligands. In orderto survey the influence of the properties of neutral ligands on the structures of silver(I)sulfonates, six kinds of sulfonate anions (L1=p-toluenesulfonate, L2=1-naphthalenesulfonate,L3=3-carboxylate-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, L4=1, 3, 6, 8-pyrenetetrasulfonate,L5=p-hydroxylbenzenesulfonate, L6=p-aminobenzenesulfonate) and six kinds of neutral N-or P- containing ligands, namely, triphenylphosphine (PPh3, a monodentate ligand), pyrazine(Pyr, a divergent bidentate ligand), β-picoline(Pic, a monodentate ligand), 4,4'-bipyridine(4,4'-bipy, a divergent bidentate ligand), 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (biim, adivergent bidentate ligand) and hexamethylenetetramine (hmt, a tetradentate ligand) wereselected for study, and thirteen novel silver(I) sulfonates containing neutral ligands have beensynthesized: Ag(L1)(PPh3)2 (1), Ag(L1)(Pyr) (2), Ag(L2)(PPh3)3 (3), [Ag(L2)(Pyr)]·H2O (4),[Ag2(L3)(PPh3)4(H2O)]·1.5CH3CN·0.5H2O (5), [Ag2(L3)(Pyr)1.5H2O)]·H2O (6),[Ag4(L4)(PPh3)10]·8H2O (7), Ag4(L4)(Pyr)4(H2O)2 (8), [Ag(L5)(Pic)2]·H2O (9),[Ag1.5(L5)(4,4'-bipy)1.5]·3H2O (10), [Ag2L3(biim)2]·2H2O (11), AgL6(biim)(12) and[Ag(L2)(hmt)]·H2O (13). The crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-raydiffraction. Compounds 1, 3, 5 and 7 possess discrete structures, and compound 9 displaysdimeric structure, while compounds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 show polymeric structureswith different dimensionalities, respectively. Moreover, compounds 2, 3, and 5 exhibitphotoluminescent properties at room temperature. In addition the compounds are alsocharacterized by IR and elemental analyses.
