Acrylic resin is extensively applied in automobile coatings and some other fields of light industry, instrument, architecture, rubber and paper because of its good properties of gloss retention, color retention, heat resistance and corrosion resitance. However, conventional acrylic resin coatings contain vast organic solvent. With the society development, many countries in the world pass the law to restrict the discharge of VOC. Therefore, the research of waterdilutable acrylic coatings is very valuable. SiO2 nanoparticle has many good properties of strong hardness, abrasive resistance, corrosion resistance and acid fastness. The combination of Sio2 nanoparticle with acrylic resin to prepare inorganic nanomaterial/polymer composite has been proved to be an effective way to improve the mechanical property of coating film.In this paper silicon sol was prepared by ion exchanging method. After the surface of SiO2 nanoparticle was modified by silane coupling agent, lipotropic SiO2 nanoparticle was prepared. The effect of dispersant agent, silane coupling agent and reaction condition on the lipophilicity of SiO2 nanoparticle was studied systematically. With methyl methacrylate, buthl actylate, methacrylic acid and hydroxyl ethylacrylate as comonomer, waterdilutable acrylic resin was synthesized. The effect of carboxy content, hydroxyl content, glass state temperature, neutralizer and neutralization value on resin waterdilutable property was studied. Nano SiO2 /polyacrylic waterdilutable coating was synthesized by "SiO2 nanoparticle direct dispersion" and "polymerization with the presence of SiO2 nanoparticle". The effect of SiO2 nanoparticle content and reaction method on coating film hardness, adhesion, resistance to impact, thermal stability was studied. According to the results of IR, TEM, the microscopic state of nano SiO2/polyacrylic waterdilutable coating was investigated.As compared with nano SiO2/polyacrylic waterdilutable coating prepared by "SiO2 nanoparticle direct dispersion" and common acrylic waterdilutable coating, nano SiO2/polyacrylic waterdilutable coating prepared by "polymerization with the presence of SiO2 nanoparticle" provided with good coating film hardness, adhesion, resistance to impact and thermal stability. These good properties stem from the features of nanoparticle, organic silicon compound and acrylic resin.
