Nowadays, the manufacturing enterprises all over the world are facing the increasingly competitive and global market, and the abilities of design and production are the most important ingredient for their core competitive abilities. Above all, the capacity of product's research and development is the essential knowledge asset. Viewing the knowledge as the enterprise asset, the knowledge management has been the popular mode and trend in the enterprise management domain. Mould and die manufacturing is the typical customer-driven production, and quality, cost and making span are the key factors for mould and die manufacturers to prevail at the competition. The efficiency and quality of mould and die design can significantly affect these three facets. Mould and die design is an innovative process which is mainly dependent upon abundant experience and knowledge from expert. To support the design process, the generated or generating design knowledge in the enterprise must be caught and organized systematically. With the guidance of design knowledge which has been experienced through the manufacturing processes, the designers can complete the design mission efficiently without the unnecessary errors. As lead to the improvement of the successful percentage of tests, the shortening of the making span and the production cost's cutting down. Consequently, this can enhance the competency of the manufacturers in the industry and then succeed in the market finally.In this paper, the ontology-based knowledge representation and process approach towards the knowledge management of mould and die design are presented. Firstly, the knowledge content and format in the mould design process has been analyzed by the example of injection mould design, and then the characteristic and architecture of mould and die design knowledge are established. Based on the requirement of knowledge representation by the knowledge management, this paper introduces ontology as the mould and die design knowledge representing mechanism, and then analyzes the design knowledge domain architecture by dividing it into three layers: top-level, enterprise-level and application-level.
