In this thesis a novel Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) compose of hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) and hydrophobic polystyrene(PS) was obtained. Synthesis, structure , swelling and adsorption properties of it were studied.Poly (vinyl acetate)(PVAc)/polystyrene(PS) IPN was synthesized by sequential method . PVAc in the IPN was alcoholyzed, then we obtained poly(vinyl alcohol)-polystyrene IPN(PVA/PS IPN).Structure and hydroxyl values of PVA/PS IPN were characterized and measured respectively. The results show that both hydrophilic group hydroxyl group and hydrophobic group benzene ring are in this novel IPN. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of IPN compose of different ratio show the two special of IPN was compatible or compatible partially. Both the swelling ratios of gel type PVA/PS IPN in water and the absorption capacity of gel type PVA/PS IPN in different solvent were measured. The following conclusions were experimentally revealed: (1) The swelling ratio of IPN increases with the increase of the mass ratio of hydrophilic PVA network in IPN. (2) The effect of the crosslinking degree of the first network on swelling ratio is greater thant it of the second network. (3) The absorption capacity of IPN in phenolic solvent which have hydrophilic group and hydrophobic group is higher than that of other solvents. It is found that the swelling mechanism of the IPN in phenolic solvents is based on the cooperative interactions of π~π...
