With the rapidly development of economic and technology, the manufacturing industry is facing the challenges from the economic competition on a global scale. It is required that products in the market must be lower cost, high quality and shorten time to market. Therefore the enterprise should satisfy with the requirements in the market by rapidly responds cost-effective. Traditional manufacturing systems have not been adapted to those new requirments. A new manufacturing system----RMS (Reconfigurable Manufacturing System) has been proposed and become a hot topic in the 21st. Reconfigurable Machine Tools (RMT) is a very impromt part of RMS, and at the same time it is the key technology of equipment of RMS. This thesis is supported by Shannxi Province education department's Special scientific foundation project (No.02JK112), Research on the general structure plan of RMT is studied in this paper. The main contents are as follows:The kinematic fuction plan of RMT is studied which is based on the principle of machine tools. Through the concept of tool cutting surface and surface forming method,the database of tools and processing surface are established according to their reasonable category,and their alluding relationship is studied. Then based on generative principle, the kinematic fuction plan is made from the processing single surface, and through code technology of convenient to computer dealing with tools and processing surface, information resource storehouse of tools and processing surface are set up. Then user processing demand information model is establishmented., n machine tool kinematic functional design several basic questions are studied based on above storehouse and model, and the RMT movement function synthesis design method is established. Working space design method of RMT is researched based on the screw theory. According to the RMT function module establishment request, it is built the RMT function module storehouse and produced the RMT general structure plan design method. Finally, the prototype software system of RMT is developed which is based on above general structure plan, and it is proved to be feasible for RMT design by an application example.
