Since it came forth in 1980's, Virtual instrumentation has been fueled by ever-advancing computer technology and has offered us many advantages such as cost-effectiveness, flexibility and customization etc. Although virtual instruments are more and more widely used today, in china, few reports have been heard about applying virtual instruments technology and electrochemical test technique together to corrosion detecting and monitoring. In this paper, a corrosion electrochemical system based on virtual instrument was reported. In addition, a control program was developed in LabVIEW for 1286EI and 1250FRA. The details of the two parts are as follows: The Virtual Corrosion Electrochemical System is composed of a general potentiostat, a NI DAQ-6024E multifunction I/O device and a set of suitable programs. This system makes a simple functional potentiostat able to perform various corrosion tests through operating a virtual front panel on PC screen. The suitable programs, developed in LabVIEW 6.1, generate waveform, acquire the potential and current and analyze the data. The utility of the system was assessed for several experiments including in the lab and in field. The control program for Solartron 1286EI and 1250FRA was also developed in LabVIEW 6.1. This program makes a PC send control command to 1286EI and 1250FRA and receive data from the two instruments through GPIB. When applied to measure the corrosion rate of H70 brass/tap water system and 304ss/NaCl solution system, satisfied results were gained. Using Remote Panels tool in LabVIEW, 1286EI and 1250FRA were remotely controlled to take measurements by means of the Ethernet in the lab. Experiments can be done on any PC in the lab by operating remote panels in both the LabVIEW environment and web pages.
