The high oil absorption resins were synthesized by emulsion copolymerization process, using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as emulsifier, potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as chemical-crosslinker, partially physical crosslinking was introduced into the oil absorption resin which was traditionally synthesized by single-chemical crosslinking. Polybutadiene (PB) was filled into oil absorption resin as physical crosslinker to construct a kind of three dimensional networks with high crosslink degree and low crosslink density.The effects of monomer ratio, reaction temperature, and emulsifier and initiator concentration on the kinetics of copolymerization were investigated. It showed that the rate of copolymerization rose as the increase of polymerization temperature, the overall apparent copolymerization energy of the system was 70.67kJ/mol, and the rate of copolymerization had a power 0.43 of the emulsifier concentration, 0.56 of the initiator concentration as well as 0.49 of the monomer butyl acrylate concentration.Particle size distribution of the oil absorption resin latex was studied and the result showed that particle size were between 65 and 130nm and had good monodispersity. As the increase of emulsifier concentration, particle became smaller and particle size distribution broadened;when the reaction temperature rose, particle size minished;and the increase of initiator concentration also diminished the particle size of the copolymer;monomer ratio had certain effects on particle size, as the proportion of St grows, particle size largened and the distribution narrowed a little.The best oil absorbency of the synthesized high oil absorption resin latex which includes partially physical crosslinking, reached up to 45.1(g/g). Many parameters influence oil absorbency, and the recipe and operation conditions were optimized as follows: water-oil ratio = 4:1, 2wt% polybutadiene(PB), 3wt% ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), mass ratio of styrene (St) : butyl acrylate (BA) = 3:1, lwt% sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and lwt% potassium persulfate (KPS) at 75 °C for about 3h (reaction for 2h, curing for 1h).The repetitious oil absorbency property was studied, the result showed that the maximum oil swelling decreased a little, and most oil absorption resin can maintain about80% of initial oil absorbency after several times.The property of dealing with oily waste water was studied, and found that the synthesized high oil absorption resin had a good absorbency for waste water containing toluene and clear oil-water selectivity. It absorbed oil at a high velocity during initial period, the concentration of oily waste water reduced from lOOppm to 5ppm~8ppm after disposal by oil absorption resin, and it rose back to initial concentration gradually when the resin reached saturation.Compared with traditional oil absorbent materials, the high oil absorption resin prepared not only had higher oil absorbency, but also had good repetitious oil absorbency property and oil-water selectivity. The application of high oil absorption resin latex had offered a simple and efficient way for disposing oily waste water from industry.
