With the increasing speed of machines to produce cans, there is an increasing requirement for seaming rolls. The grooves of seaming rolls are the ones with revolving curved surfaces. And an accurate shape of the groove is necessary so that the required product shape can be obtained and at the same time deformation resistance can be reduced. Meanwhile, smooth surface with low roughness (Ramin=0. 1μ m) is desired so as to reduce the friction in the manufacturing process. However, these requirements could be met at the same time. An effective technique to obtain such grooves is to use form-grinding in the finishing machining. Thus, the shaped wheel dressing becomes one of the key points in the form-grinding process.According to the problems in the course of working, the influence of different truers and different dressing parameters on the grooves of seaming rolls are analyzed, thus, the suitable truer and dressing parameters are selected.Besides, the stucture of truer are designed, and a new NC dresser with three NC axes is developed. In the course of the experiment, we observe the experiment phenomenon, and analyze the influence of assembling errors and dressing parameters on the profile accuracy. Based on the discussion above, we can improve the truer. With the optimization of dressing and grinding parameters, the profile accurancy of seaming rolls can be improved greatly. To meet the requirement of its low roughness, a new process, magnetic abrasive grinding, which is not harmful to the profile accuracy, is applied. By analyzing the force and rigidity of brush of magnetic abrasives in the magnetic field,it is found that there are various factors which play important parts in the course of polinshing, such as working gap, magnetic flux density in the working area, structure and particle size of magnetic abrasives, shape of magnetic pole, rotative velocity of workpiece, magnetoconductivity of workpiece materials. It is shown that lower roughness Ra = Q.l/jm can be obtained by using wet abrasive grinding and better result can be got by optimizing the various parameters. And the problems in the course of polishing some special irregular surfaces and some small grooves are studied. According to the experiment results,it is clear that it is a high efficient and reliable finising machining method to polish such special surfaces by using magnetic abrasive griniding. With the processes of form-grinding and magnetic abrasive grinding, it is proved in the experiments that the requirements of finishing machining for seaming rolls can be met. In addition to grinding such grooves, it can be used in the finishing machining of the parts with complex revolving curved surfaces.
