Environment is one of the most noticeable issues in the world. Remote sensingtechnology shows an obvious predominance to monitor the situation and changes ofenvironment effectively. By means of remote sensing, we can quickly andeconomically get multi-stages of environment information, and fully realize thedevelopment and evolvement of environment, which provides significant referencefor land use and environment management.By using QuickBird remote sensing data in 2004, ETM+ data in 1999, TM data in1991 and 1998 and others, this paper mainly studied the current environment situationand its dynamic changes caused by different mining methods in Longnan ThuliumMine in Jiangxi Province, and also probed into the effectiveness of thermal infraredremote sensing in environmental investigation. The main work or conclusions shownin the paper includes:1. The information of objects in the mining area on remote sensing images hasbeen enhanced through radiate correction, orthorectification, image fusion and otherimage enhancement methods. The results shows that remote sensing informationenhancement is most useful in information extraction.2. The information of current environmental status in the mining area has beenextracted, and the statistical data of different land type has been calculated in detail. The results show the lands which had been abandoned without reconstruction takes up8.82% of the total mining areas. The in-situ mine leaching technics brings somegeological hazards such as landslide, although it decreased the water and soil loss in agreat degree . There are 401 landslides in total, which takes up 288 300 m2 in miningareas. Some suggestions on the environmental reconstruction in mining areas areproposed ,such as using raw materials reasonably which decreases acid-pollution oralkaline-pollution of lands, planting the appropriate vegetations which could be adaptto mining environment.3. The mining environment states has been monitored dynamically through matrixanalysis on classification graphs, and the changes of mining environment has beenstudied. The results show that land types in mining areas were developed in a similartrend. The situation of thulium mining was in a state of disorder and the environmentsin mining areas were destroyed heavily in the end of 1990s'. After that time, themining system became normalized gradually, vegetation increased in a great way andenvironment began to get better.4. The changing information of mining environment has been extracted by meansof sun elevation angle correction, temperate field unitariness, difference operation anddensity slice, and the reasons of the changes has been analyzed. The research showsthat water in mines is the most sensitive to thermal infrared images. Since miningmethods in Longnan Thulium Mine is secluded, thermal infrared RS which could bemuch more effective and economical is proposed to investigate thulium mines.
