Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)have recently attracted more and more interest. It has a unique structure : an inorganic silica-like core (Si8O12) surrounded by eight organic corner groups. The thermal properties and mechanical properties of polymers can largely be improved by introducing POSS to the polymer matrix. Therefore , POSS/ polymers composite materials are becoming a focus of research.In this dissertation, the structure and the preparation as well as the properties of POSS were discussed. The development of POSS/ polymers composite materials were also summarized, as well as their synthesis methods.POSS / PS composite materials was prepared by emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of commercial glycidylisobutyl-POSS. The structure of the polymers was investigated by IR and NMR. And we also have particle size and DSC analysis of polymers. According to our study, introducing POSS can effectively improve POSS/PS composite materials' Tg.POSS( with 8 -chloropropyl) was prepared by cheep commercial material. Then another kind of POSS / PS composite materials was prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP). The synthesized product was characterized by NMR, IR, MT, GPC, DSC and TG. It was found that the yield, molecula weight and Tg were dependent on reaction time. And the thermal properties of POSS/PS composite materials were improved.
