The properties, applications and research situation at home and abroad of nanometer Iron Oxide have been presented in this thesis. The reaction mechanism of precipitation method to prepare namometer particles and the theoretical foundation for surface modification of nanometer Fe2O3 are mainly discussed. The essence of the experiment process has been studied through a series of experiments. In order to get the optimum processing conditions and the effects of various factors in preparation of Nanometer Iron Oxide and surface modification of prepared particles, mono-factor method and multi-factor orthogonalizing design method have been applied. In this thesis, both inorganic and organic surface modifications for nanometer Iron Oxide were carried out using different modifiers, and the optimal process conditions have been selected by mono-factor and multi-factor orthogonal experimentsrespectively. The following has been obtained through lots of experiments: (1) It is possible that the preparation of nanometer Iron Oxide with Iron chloride and sodium carbonate as materials and by Chemical Precipitation Method. The optimal process conditions are: the precipitant is washed by distilled water and ethanol, the drying time is 35min in microwave oven, the calcination is at 500°C for 180min. Under these conditions, the average diameter of nanometer particles is about15nm.(2) After inorganic modification with Zinc Chloride, the dispersity and stability of nanometer particles in both the distilled water and ethanol become better, and the ability of UV shielding is greatly improved.(3) Nanometer Iron Oxide is turned to hydrophobic after surface modification with sodium stearate. The feasible conditions are: the dosage of modifier reagent is 10%, the modification temperature is 40°C, the time is 20min, and the hydrophobic value is 0.426.(4) Nanometer Iron Oxide is modified with titanatic coupling agent. The optimal conditions of modification are: the reaction time is 30min, the modifier addition is 10ml, the temperature is 40°C.
