The gradient refractive index (Gradient-Index, GRIN) material, a new kind of optical material, has important applied value in many fields such as optical fiber communication system and micro-optical system. It can have simple geometric shape and mainly depends on inhomogeneous refractive index distraction of medium to realize each optical function. It has received widespread attention because of the merits, such as its small volume, short optical path, light weight, superior performance, easiness to produce and integrate. GRIN optical device which has been successed to apply is mostly prepared by inorganic material. The start to research polymer GRIN materials especially the polymer GRIN optical device was much later than that of the inorganic GRIN material.In this thesis, we combine the preparation of spherical GRIN sphere optical device with the research of polymer GRIN material, prepare the GRIN sphere with organic material by suspension-diffusion copolymerization and swelling-diffusion copolymerization in order to solve some theoretical and technological problems, have made some progress. In this thesis, the main work includes the contents as follows.Chapter 1 reviews the development, present situation and type of GRIN optical materials, then introduces the types and characteristics of polymer GRIN material, discusses the effect of polymer chemical constitution on the polymer material optical quality, comments the characteristics and prospects of various fabrication methods. On the basis mentioned above, we put forward the assumption and foundation for the studies.Chapter 2 reviews the research development and application of spherical GRIN sphere lens, analyses the refractive index distributed form of GRIN sphere fabricated by diffusion copolymerization according to the theory as well as the choice factor of monomer system. And then deals with the studies on the polymer spherical GRIN sphere fabricated by suspension copolymerization method.
