Reactive polymer microgels are intramolecularly crosslinked particles with nanodimensions, so they have special properties and functions. In this dissertation, the reactive polymer microgels have been prepared by emulsion polymerization. In addition, the properties of the microgel prepared and it's applications on pigment printing have been studied.The emulsion copolymerization was carried out by using styrene, butyl acrylate and methylacrylic acid as monomers, divinylbenzene as crosslinker, As/TX-30 as emulsifier and ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator.The particle size of latex was within 100 nm, and the particle size distribution was narrow, therefore the emulsion had a good stability and long pot-life.The influences of soft/hard monomers ratio, the dosages of emulsifier, initiator, crosslinking monomer, functional monomer etc were investigated by testing particle size and viscosity of microgel latex. By studing water absorption, mechanical properties and surface morphology of polymer film, the basic film-forming properties of microgel were also studied extensively.The reaction characteristics of St-DVB microgel emulsion copolymerization kinetics has been studied. The effects of temperature, emulsifier dosage, dosage and crosslinker dosage on the co-polymerization reactivity ratios has been analysised. It was proved that both gel effect and volumetric effect play an important role. The optimum composition and condition for synthesizing microgel are established: crosslinker(8%),MAA(3%),BA/St(65:35),As/Tx-30(l:2~l:3),emulsifier(2%-3%), initiator(0.4%~0.5%).Studies on the rheology about this reactive microgel. It shows that the dosage of crosslinker involved in microgel and microgel added into the binder have influence on their rheology.In the present work, the microgels prepared by emulsion polymerization were used to modify pigment printing binders and it is proved that thixotropic index and Sagging properties of pigment printing binders have increased, mechanical property and crocking fastness of the binders' polymer film can be largely improved. It shows that microgel can be applied in the ultraviolet radiation shield coatings and obviouslyimprove the property of anti -aging in the coatings. The amount of microgel used to modify the pigment printing binders and the crosslinker, functional monomer in the microgel have influence on performance.
