The polyacrylamide is a distinctive water-soluble polymer and is applied in the field of petroleum, chemical engineering and water treatment extensively. But some problems have been found such as the worse tolerance of high salinity, high temperature and high shear rate in the application of the polyacrylamide, it is restricted greatly in the fact. The hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide was synthesized by the radical copolymerization in the aqueous media. Seleting acrylamide and sodium acrylic acid as hydrophilic monomer, cetyl dimethyl allyl ammonium chloride as hydrophobic monomer, AM-01, ammonium persulfate and sodium bisulfite as the complex initiator. It was discussed how the viscosity of copolymer solution was affected by the experimental factors and then the optimum synthesis conditions were determined. The molecular weights of polymers were measured by the viscosity method, the polymer was characterized by the infrared absorption spectrum and then the molecular structure was confirmed. In addition, it was investigated how the properties of the polymer solution were affected by the polymer concentration, the surformer concentration, salinity, temperature and shear rate . we found the critical overlap concentration wound be appear with the increasing of the polymer concentration, above the critical overlap concentration, for the intermolecular, they exhibited the conspicuous tolerance of high salinity, high temperatureand high shear rate. The hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide is provided with favorable performance, it can be applied in petroleum and other industry Field.
