Pipeline is the major way of transporting crude oil. In recent years, with the rapid development of the offshore petroleum industry, more and more submarine pipelines were built. Leakage occasionally occurs due to the corrosion and mechanical damage etc. during the service life, which brings the serious loss of economy and environmental pollution. In order to avoid these accidents, it is important to localize the leakage of the submarine pipeline as soon as possible. Therefore this topic has attracted many countries'attention and it becomes the problem which urgently needs to be solved.Firstly the corroded and damaged mechanisms of the pipelines are analyzed. Many kinds of damage detection and leakage monitoring / localization methods of the pipelines as well as their work principles are introduced. The advantages and limitations of them and their applicable scopes are also discussed, which is helpful to the project practice. Thus, several methods of them that are suitable for offshore pipeline are chosen to study further and bring the reliable basis for the project decision.In the paper, the examination and the monitor methods of pipeline leakage are mainly discussed. The methods based on the software and the hardware are analyzed in detail, including their advantages and their applicable scopes. The method based on the pressure wave is chosen as the monitoring method in this investigation. The traditional localization formulas of the pressure wave method are modified. A new iterated algorithm is proposed to enhance the accuracy of leakage localization. The leakage signals are processed by wavelet transformation. The flux monitoring method is also adopted. Correspondingly, the comprehensive leakage localization monitor system is developed.
