Core is the first hand data for carrying out petroleum exploration and development, which is of abundant geological information closely related with hydrocarbon exploration and development. It is also an important method using for recognizing underground hydrocarbon generation, migration and formation. So it is of great value for further exploration and development. Though traditional core management model can meet the demands, its management evaluation is far behind the day with much defect in using, protection and achievement sharing, which is undesirable for further study. This paper is based on practice for core storage, management and using to study how to realize best design, buildup and management of core image database and core description database, comprehensively employ network technique, image processing technique, geographical information technique and software development technique to really accomplish integrative management of core image and core description information. This paper got the following progression:1. According to coring and core preservation, to separately plan and design for well, barrel and section on database designing so as to resolve problems in well description information and core data saving.2. For core image saving, to choose image section scanning to save core image in database with no data losing, resolving the problems such as tremendous data transfers for whole well and whole barrel saving, unavailable stochastic visiting, big redundance, unable inquiring for barrel spanning, and so on.3. To employ geographical information technique in core management system, combine geographical information with relative property information to realize intuitionistic inquiring from core well distribution to core image so as to fulfill visible demands for production, scientific study, management and decision-making for spatial information.4. To use bar chart analysis and contrast processing technique to relatively process the core image which is inquired; to use vision phantom technique to realize 3D display for external image of cores, which is favorable for users to observe cores conventionally.5. In order to meet the demands for core image saving space and its definition, select reasonable form for image file saving to ensure the demoded image close to the original one.6. For database safety, to actualize five aspects including network layer, system layer, user layer, application layer and database layer, to process core image with digital watermark technique to resolve the problem for core image copyright protection and safely protect core database as well.7. Image file needs big space for saving and data transfer may occupy vast network bandwidth. In order to improve system function, a set of saving scheme as SAN+NAS Assemblage is put forward, which can make the data flow in the system reasonably and realize combination of daily work with data maintenance as well.
