With the gradual aggravation of the market competition, to innovate the traditional production and management mode by information integration and advanced management will be faced urgently to each enterprise. ERP and some new management systems have enhanced the level of the management, but they are weak in tool management. Under the condition of marketing competition, manufacturing cost will be controlled seriously in an enterprise. it is obviously that the tool management and its inventory is a bottleneck in implement of manufacturing information integration.Based on the research on the status of tools at the different stage of the tool life cycle, the organization of tool management, the tool flow and the data flow in a ordinary factory is analysed. A model special for tool management is presented, which can cover all application from tool inventory, tool ration to tool purchase within a manufacturing enterprise. In the paper, the inventory theory and its relative technique is discussed. Based on the analysis of the difference between the tradictional inventory model and the tool inventory model, a self-digestiable tool inventory model is presented, which may be the important supplement for the theory of the traditional inventory. According to the principle of Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) and theory of tool ration in production, the necessary input information and arithmetic for calculating the tool requirement plan is given out with production cycle and optimal tool demand. The different control strategy between tool inventory and traditional inventory are also discussed in the paper.Based on the study, the prototype of a tool management software based on B/S is developed which can be used to verify the computation and data flow of this research.
