The Geneva mechanism was adopted by automatic mechanism because the simple structure and steady performance. But the intrinsic defect of straight Geneva mechanism was more distinct when the modern mechanical speed and precision sustained development. So, many mechanical designer pay some attention to structal improvement design of the Geneva mechanism, and more and more improvement shape were appeared. This paper aimed at intermittent rotary sheet transfer, carried on structal analysis and improvement design of Geneva mechanism, and analysis the functions of new mechanism. This study is providing theoretical basis for the design and manufacture of this kind of the high speed and precision intermittent mechanism. The main done in this paper as follow:(1) The straight Geneva mechanism and available improvement programme were analysised , based on the straight Geneva exist flexible impact and not suitable to high speed situation ,the intrinsic defect and bottle-neck of Geneva mechanism with curved slots are pointed out through study of kinematics and dynamics characteristics.(2) In order to overcome the intrinsic defect and bottle-neck of Geneva mechanism with curved slots, a new Geneva mechanism with combined contour curves was proposed, and its design ideology, essentials and method were put forward and analysised.(3) This new ideology and method of improvement design were applied to intermittent rotary sheet transfer mechanism. The kinematics simulation was described by PRO/E, and the result indicates that the new mechanism can improve kinematics and dynamics characteristics based on which can complete the sheet transfer.(4) On the basis of rigidity hypothesis, the dynamics characteristics of new Geneva was researched, the main parameter which influence dynamics characteristics were analysised.The optimize model was established ,the superior characteristics regard as aim function.(5) The dynamics optimize model was applied to intermittent sheet transfer mechanism link with work characteristics. The new Geneva mechanism was optimized based on MATLAB, and the results were analysised. Optimization design can improve dynamics characteristics of mechanism ,which provide a reference to engineering application.
