The environmental protection and sustainable development problem in industry becomes the focus of attention these days, as a result novel inorganic filler rather than carbon black is introduced into the tire industry. Silica is a typical inorganic filler. The production of silica does not depend on oil. Applying silica in the tire follows the decrease in driving energy consumption. The excellent performance of silica filled rubber counts on silane coupling agent. On the grounds of traditional sulfur containing silane coupling agent and the molecular design conception, novel sulfur containing silanes were synthesized and incorporated into the silica filled styrene butadiene rubber system. Its effects on physical properties of the filler-rubber composite were examined.Ethyl xanthate silane(EXS) was synthesized by reacting chloride propyl trimethoxyl silane with potassium ethyl xanthate. Dithiobenzoate Silane(DTS) was synthesized by reacting chloride propyl trimethoxyl silane, carbon disulfide and benzene. Gas phase chromatography, mass spectrum and infrared spectrum are used to characterize the novel silanes' structures. Silica is pretreated with EXS and then silica filled SBR samples are made. The sample's physical properties are examined by the means of tensile experiment, tear experiment and dynamic mechanical analysis. The silica filled SBR vulcanizates exhibited viable mechanical performance and the potential in tire application. The tensile strength is 20.9MPa, tear strength is 575N/cm, loss factor at 0℃ is 0.33, loss factor at 60℃ is 0.17. The above results show that EXS possesses perfect coupling effect in silica filled SBR. The vulcanizate has high wet sliding resistance and low rolling resistance. Thus, it is of potential in tire industry.
