In this paper, the technique of metalizing the surface of quartz optical fiber wasstudied in order to provide a reference for embedding the fiber grating into metalmaterials. The quartz optical fiber used in our experiment is non-metal material witha diameter of only 120μm.In our work, a combined technique with electroless Ni-P alloy plating processand subsequently electroplating Ni process was used to metalize the surface ofoptical fiber to meet the requirements for welding. By means of XRD,SEM,EDS, themorphyology, structure and the properties of plating layers were discussedtentatively. The main work include:1. Pre-treatmentThe surface of quartz optical fiber has no catalytic activity with a strong tensionin solutions. The diameter of the optical fiber is small, so the pre-treatment is crucial. In our paper, the selection of pre-treatment solutions, operational conditions werediscussed. Especially the coarsening time and the influence of heating treatmentwere studied.2. Electroless Ni-P plating on the surface of optical fiberBased on the specialties of the plating interface, suitable electroplating solutionwas picked out. Through the perpendicular experiments and single factorexperiments, the optimum technical parameters and conditions were acquired. Also, the influences of them were studied.3. Subsequent electroptating NiThe electroplating Ni was carried out based on the electroless plating layer as asubstrate. In this section, the research put the emphasis on the influences of currentdensity on deposition rate and the quality of electroplating layer.4. Effects of rare earths on techniqueBy adding different kinds of rare earths (La, Ce, Yb ,Pr) into the basal solutions, their effects on deposition rate, stability of solution and surface quality were studied. The results showed: that the additions of suitable amount of single rare earthelements could shrink the size of metal crysitals, increase the deposition rate andimprove the stability of solutions.
