The main purpose of this paper is how to metalize the surface of quartz opticalfiber by means of electroless Ni-P-B plating, subsequently electroplating Ni on theformed thin Ni-P-B alloy on the surface of optical fiber, and to examine the effects ofrare earths on the course of electroless plating and electroplating, including thedeposition rate of the metals, the stabilities of the solutions and the appearance qualityof the films. The experiment involves the following three aspects:(1) Pre-treatment of the fiber surfaceOptical fiber surface should be actived by pre-treatment before elcctrolessplating.During pre-treatment, etching solution and etching time were considered(2) Electroless plating and electroplatingActivated surface of optical fiber is needed for electroless Ni-P-B plating and thedeposition should be functioned as a conducting layer. The main work of this aspectwas to optimize the electroless plating solution compositions and technicalparameters in order to obtaine a process with good instruction and repratance for thepurpose on preparing the optical fiber needed to the embed optical grating sensorwhen pressure and temperature were simultaniously measured.(3) Effects of rare earthsThe effects of the oxides of Nd,Yb,Ce and La on deposition rate of metals, stability of plating solutions and appearance quality were studied during the course ofelectroless plating. The effects of different amount of rare earths additives on nickelelectrodepositions was studied in a typical nickel electroplating solution for thefurther metallization of the surface of optical fiber.
