Water is one of the abundantly available resources in nature and is essential for animal and plant life. With the development of the industry, the varieties and quantity of wastes have been. increasing rapidly. Pollution of water bodies is increasing steadily due to the industrial production. Most of the industrial productions are organic matter, and these compounds are non-degradable. Therefore, the major concern is to degrade the organic matter in water before it is discharged into the environment. In this dissertation, two kinds of catalysts were prepared. One catalyst was supported by the cation exchange resin, the other was supported by the modified kaolin. The characterization of the catalysts was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrareds spectroscopy (IR), electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and so on. Moreover, the application of the catalysts was studied in the phenol wastewater and the paper mill wastewater. The effects of pH, the different metal ion and NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical oxidation process were also studied. Based on the above discussions, it could be concluded that the catalyst suportted Fe3+ acted as a good catalyst not only in the process of electrochemical oxidation degradation of phenol but also in the treatment of paper mill wastewater. In the first part of the dissertation, the basic knowledge of development and species of the organics removal methods was introduced; the catalysts applied in the degradation of the organics were also reviewed. In the second part of this dissertation, the electrochemical oxidation of phenol wastewater catalyzed by metal ion supported on cation exchange resin was investigated. The catalyst was characterized by IR, SEM and XPS spectra and the effects of pH, the different metal ion and NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical oxidation phenol process were also studied. It was found that the catalyst containing Fe3+ had the highest electrochemical catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol. The possible mechanics of the electrochemical degradation process was proposed. The third part of this dissertation, the molybdenum and phosphate modified kaolin as a new catalyst was prepared. The electrochemical degradation pulp and paper mill wastewater catalyzed by metal ion supported on molybdenum and phosphate modified kaolin in the electrochemical reactor was investigated. The catalyst was characterized by IR, XRD, XPS and SEM spectra and the effects of pH, the different metal ion and NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical degradation proces.s were also studied. It was found that the modified kaolin loaded. Fe3+ had the highest electrochemical catalytic activity for the electrochemical degradation pulp and paper mill wastewater. In the forth parts, the V-P modified kaolin as a new catalyst was prepared and characterized by IR, SEM and XRD. Its application in the degradation of the paper mill wastewater was also studied.
