The building energy consumption in our country is huge, so it is necessary to actualize building energy saving. As a dominant architectural energy-saving technology, external thermal insulation technologies have been extensively used. Among all the kinds of external thermal insulation systems, system based on expanded polystyrene (EPS) is adopted mostly in the market. Adhesive is the key component in this system, but the reports about it are few. So the study of adhesive about EPS system not only has academic significance, but also has great application potential. In this work, the copolymer of VeoVa 10/ VAc / BA / AA were prepared in semi-continuous emulsion copolymerization process using SMAS as reactive surfactant and KPS as initiator. A composite emulsifier composed of SDS and OP-10 was selected. So bigger electrostatic force could exist among the emulsion particles, and thick hydrated layers were generated around the latexes. The combined action improved the stability of the emulsion. In addition, SMAS was used to reduce the amount of the normal emulsifier and boost the water resistance of the film. The synthesis conditions of the emulsion were studied, and better reaction condition was obtained. The measurements, such as IR, MDSC and so on, were employed to characterize the structure of polymer prepared under the better condition. The results indicated that double bond took part in the reaction completely and homogeneous copolymer was generated. The adhesive was prepared by emulsion and cement, and the mixing mass ratio was 1:1.8. Then its applied performances were determined. The results showed that relevant performance satisfied the standard JG149—2003.
