The Beginning Of The Mordern Environmental Movement Of China

The concept of the"Environmental Protect movement"came to China in the 1970s, which has undergone a huge transformation in the China's specific social context. Given the difference between the Eastern and the Western understanding, the chinese early environmental movement has not yet been duely recognized by the western world.Most overseas scholars believe that the chinese environmental consciousness should be rooted in the western environmental protection thought since the 1970s. For the situation, before this time, they mostly pay attention to the chinese environmental destruction in their research. Meanwhile, Domestic scholars mainly focus on the environmental improvement in China since the United Nations Stockholm environment conference in 1972. Few people have known about the environment construction stories since the foundation of the People's Republic of Cina to 1970s. Is Chinese modern environmental consciousness really originated from the western environmental protection thought? Does Chinese enviormental protection really start from the Stockholm environmental conference? We need futher discussion on all these questions.This article would take the "Greening the motherland " movement in 1950s as key affair, trying to affirm that the Chinese mordern environment consciousness initiate in the 1950's in china. Some domestic scholars, especially the scholars in forestry history reasearch have touched on this afforestation movement in the 1950's, but they neither have carried on the details of this movement, nor discussed this movement from a perspective modern environmental protection consciousness. Therefore, when we revisit the Chinese modern environmental protection development, we have to carefully reconsider this afforestation movement from a new angle of view.The works include:(1) takes the "Greening the motherland " movement as a classic case, useing the methods of the history of science and sociology of science, picking up plenty of primal resources to make up the vacancy of the field;(2) trys to clear up the concept of the"mordern environment protection movement", On the basis of this, it will further look at the initial time and the formation of the Chinese mordern environment consciousness;(3)researchs on the environment character and psychologys the government and public played on in the movement, trying to understand the reasons of the Chinese environment movement discontinuity.The work shows that "Greening the motherland " movement in 1950s is the beginning of the the Mordern Environmental Movement of China, according to the standard of the definition. And we can see the close relation between the environment protection. and the effect of the states politics , finance and culture.
