The engraving, which has several thousand years'long history, is one of the Chinese traditional handicrafts, and it plays an important role in the history development. Furniture engraving, as a form of these traditional handicrafts, integrates manufacturing engineering with artistic quality and expresses every period style. As the progresses of Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology, to study on industrializing manufacture of Chinese traditional furniture engraving will have a positive effect on succeeding to and developing the Chinese traditional culture.This paper reviews lots of current studies from on engraving domestically and internationally corresponding fields, and discusses the development of Chinese traditional furniture engraving. Then it discusses the method of creating the 3D model from the furniture pictures, and especially creating the model on multidimensional surfaces. At last, this paper concludes the approaches of creating models and the process of engraving by making four samples on engraving machine. This paper mainly contains four sections.In the first section, this paper reviews the development of Chinese traditional furniture engraving, and concludes the position of furniture accessories which usually appear on furniture foot, stays, chair backrest and armrest, folding screen, cabinet, and ornament fittings. Comparing with the characteristic of foreign furniture and Chinese engraving, the paper claims that engraving the latter is more difficult, and the difficult problems do not exist in planar surfaces but the multidimensional surfaces.In the secondary section, the paper synthesizes the process of the wood furniture production and the numerical control manufacture, and shows the process of furniture engraving with a flow chart. According to the actual demand, it chooses the software called Mastercam Art as the primary modeling tool.In the third part, the paper summarizes the current approaches of modeling and indicates them limitation. Construing the importance and significance of furniture pictures, the paper explains the advantage of modeling from the pictures. By modeling and machining four samples, the paper discusses the method of the planar and multidimensional surfaces engraving, and solves the problems that appear in the process of modeling. For example, the graphics that are not unclosed and intersectant usually result in the modeling failure. The approach of solving the problem is that break up the junctions and connect all the relevant lines to the unclosed graphics.In the fourth section, the paper sums up the key point of the NC machining, including confirming tool paths, choosing tools and fixtures, etc. After finishing some process simulations and four experiments with real situation, the paper shows that the method of modeling from furniture pictures is feasible, and concludes the several existing problems under the different circumstances, and then gives some advices to solve them.In a word,this paper combines the modeling theories with the actual NC machining. It is an important significance to guide the industrialized production.
