There were three chapters in this dissertation. The first chapter reviewed the development of the study of the phenylacetonitrile reactions. The second chapter studied the synthesis of aryl carboxylic esters from corresponding aryl acetonitriles and alcohols using potassium iodide and iodine. Chapter three is the study of the synthesis ofα-phenyl-β-naphthalenyl acrylonitrile and their character of luminescence. In chapter one, the organic reactions in which phenylacetonitriles participated were summarized, according to the types of the reactions. They wereα- alkylation of phenylacetonitrile,α-arylation of phenylacetonitrile, lithium phenylacetonitrile, etc. There were also the cyclization of the phenylacetonitrile and the application in the synthesis of medicine. In addition, the study of phenylacetonitrile in biology was introduced briefly. At the first of chapter two, there was a review of the indirect synthesis of aryl carboxylic esters. And then, a new method of indirect synthesis of aryl carboxylic esters was studied. The products were characterized by IR, ~1H NMR. The advantages of the reactions were mild condition, simple operation and high yields. In chapter three, the synthesis ofα,β-diaryl acrylonitriles, which were synthesized by arylacetonitrile and aryldehyde directly was summarized. The synthesis of someα-phenyl-β-naphthalenyl acrylonitrile was studied. The products were characterized by IR, ~1H NMR. Their UV-Vis and PL spectra were determined, and their character of luminescence is discussed.
