Silk fiber (fabric) was treated with quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan and then the structure and properties of modified silk fiber (fabric) were researched in this subject. It provided theoretical base for developing functional silk fabric.Firstly, two kinds of different molecular weight of chitosan were available by H2O2 oxidative degradation and then two kinds of different molecular weight of chitosan were modified to quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan (HTCC), after that silk fiber (fabric) were treated with HTCC, then microcosmic morphology, aggregation structure and mechanical properties of silk fiber and dyeing behavior, antibacterial performance, wrinkle resistance and brightness of silk fabric were studied before and after treatment. Results showed that the substitution reaction occurred mainly on the amine groups of chitosan, and the degrees of substitution of HTCC exceeded 90%. After chitosan being modified to HTCC, the crystallinity and the thermodynamic stability were both dropped, and the solubility of HTCC was improved obviously. The efficient crosslinking reactions occurred among silk fiber, CA and HTCC. The crystallinity and the thermodynamic stability of treated silk fiber with HTCC solution were improved. The conformation of silk fiber had the trend ofβ—sheet, and the mechanical properties of silk fiber were increased after HTCC treatment. Dyeing behavior of silk fabric to reactive dyes and acid dyes was improved after treatment, as well as antibacterial performance and wrinkle resistance of the treated fabric. Meanwhile, the effect on whiteness of silk fabric was not obvious.
