The planetary gear reducer is widely applied in the mechanical engineering for its character such as small volume, large transmission ratio and capacity, and it plays an important role during the mining work which is used to transmit the work torque in shearer's cutting part. To improve the properties of the shearer, we should reduce the size of the planetary gear reducer in the normal movement based on considering the limited space. On the contrary, too small size and large torque will reduce the reducer deadline. So it is necessary to optimize the structure, and the traditional means is defining the primary parameter by the whole transmission ratio, obtaining a series of parameters to check the mechanical strength by choosing the number of gear-tooth according to the install condition, adjacent condition and concentric condition. But the disadvantage of the normal design lies in its huge work in repeated calculating and difficult optimization if the mechanical strength is not required.A lot of research work is done about the optimization design in this article to solve the problem, for example, the objective function is the whole volume of the planet gear and the sun gear as the smallest, establishing the constraint condition and the mathematic model of the optimum design by the design principle. As a result, the volume is reduced 20.2%, radial direction shorten 11.03%, the operating performance improved in MG-1370 shearer by applying the model. The optimized function toolbox in MATLAB software is applied in the solution, which can simplify the computer program and the process, enhance the working efficiency during computing period.Three dimensional full-scale mockup of the planetary gear reducer is established in the structural design by applying the Pro/E software three dimensional entity modeling function which is benefit in improving the product, the manufacture and the project analysis, and enhancing the product digitized degree. On the other hand, the hypothesized assembly is benefit to verify the components geometry relations and to shorten the product design cycle, the examination work and the wrong possibility during assembly.The sun gear has been carried on the bending strength finite element analysis by using the ANSYS software to examine the intensity in the planetary gears weakest components, and in the analysis process, many aspects are discussed, such as the reasonable element type choice, the mesh, loads the position and the load method precisely. As a result, the gear bending strength equivalent stress cloud chart is obtained and confirm the sun gear designs meeting to the intensity request.
