Novel azo metal complexes includinging 6-nitro-benzothiazole ring and sulfonylamino group have been designed and synthesized to obtain good optical disk storage materials. Their structures have been confirmed by MS, FT-IR and ~1H NMR spectra. The relation between the structure of azo dyes and UV-vis spectrum has been discussed. The introduction of different donor group leads to excursion and polarization ofπelectron cloud in different degree, so maxium absorption wavelength (λmax) of azo dyes has changed. The nitrogen of azo group and benzothiazole in azo dyes synthesized can form chelate bonds with metal ions. Sulfonylamino group can form molecule salt, the capacity of electron donating of coupler component increases. The energy ofπ-π~* transition reduces, soλ~max of azo metal complexes bring ride shift in comparison of azo dyes. The degree of ride shift depends on the capacity of dissolution of the molecule salt. All the azo metal complexes except 5-azo-M, their UV-vis spectrum can match DVD-R semiconductor laser equipment. Their extinction coefficients are larger than 5×10~4. The extinction coefficient of 1-azo-Ni,2-azo-Ni and 3-azo-Ni are larger than 10~5.The thermal stability of azo metal complexes has been determined by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis(TG). The TG-DSC chart of 2-azo-Ni and 2-azo-Co are sharp, their decomposition temperature are 318.80℃and 308.50℃, respectively. So they have suitable thermal stability and can meet the requirment of optical disk storage materials.
