With the development of auto industry, the higher requirements have been put forward to design and manufacturing of panel dies. The traditional design and manufacturing method of panel dies can not meet the requirements of product development. At the same time, the new concepts and technologies, such as network technology, information engineering and concurrent engineering, are being used in manufacturing enterprises. No-drawing-manufacturing is a trend of panel die manufacturing, in which CAD/CAM was earlier used.Analyzing the current manufacturing process of panel dies, the author puts forward a feasible method of no-drawing-manufacturing for panel dies, which is implemented based on information engineering, concurrent engineering and knowledge engineering. The new production process of panel dies base on no-drawing-manufacturing.The author analyzes the requirements of no-drawing-manufacturing to CAD system, especial the demands in manufacturing, management and quality control. On the basis of it, the author sets up a framework of 3D-CAD system of panel dies for no-drawing-manufacturing, and defines the functions of its modules. The key techniques to realize the system are studied. The principles and method of feature decomposition and transfer of information from design to manufacture are put forward. Based on functional components, array functional components and standard structures, the definition and application of structure features are realized. The system greatly improved the quality and efficiency of die design.On the basis of the researches, a 3D-CAD system and 3D standard database of panel drawing dies have been built on the UG platform, which provides the foundation for no-drawing-manufacturing oriented 3D-CAD of panel dies.
