With the continuous development of modern industry,the thickness of the steel plate which will be welded is increasingly high. In order to improve the production efficiency and the welding quality of thick plate,narrow gap submerged arc welding technology came into being. This paper has designed a kind of automatic control system for the narrow gap submerged arc welding equipment for the purpose of the diversification of homegrown ones.On the basis of Comparing with other welding method, this paper describes the advantages of narrow gap submerged arc welding,and then shows the key technologies of this kind of welding method. These key technologies include the detachability of flux, sidewall fusion technology, the design of welding handpiece, and automatic control system. This paper which fully learn from domestic and abroad related technologies and consider about welding reality, has designed a kind of automatic control for narrow-gap submerged arc welding system based on ARM9 embedded technology, embedded LINUX operation system, CAN bus communication technology and VGA technology,and has achieve to give friendly GUI and multipoint control.The automatic control system consists of two parts: hardware and software. In the hardware aspect,the automatic control system using CAN bus to achieve distributed control. The hardware of this control system consists of several parts: the main controller, automatic wire feeding system,welding crawling mechanism,welding hand-piece and some other parts. The focus of this paper is about the main controller of this equipment. The control core of this main controller is ARM9 embedded processor,and also designed a VGA and touch panel circuit for the purpose of giving operators nicer human-machine interface. The main controller use MCP2515 and PCA82C251 to make up CAN bus expended circuit, and this circuit is the basis of distributed control. In order to get welding parameters, this paper designed a voltage and current sample circuit,and also a special circuit to identify the type of welding power supply.The other research focus of this paper is the software of the main controller. In order to cut down the cost of development and improve the ability of transplanting, an embedded Linux operating system was chose,and designed a GUI on the basis of Qt/Embedded. For the purpose of achieving CAN communication,this paper also designed some special driver programs for CAN bus.The structure of this main controller for the narrow gap submerged arc welding equipment is reasonable, and this paper also has some creative points. The control system can achieve design requirement.
