The anti-pilling technical research has a significant economical and applied meaning. The ends of fiber will slip out of fabric and entangle with each other to form pills because of repeating friction in daily wearing and washing process. Pilling phenomenon is especially serious for knitted wool fabric and low twist knitted cotton fabric .It brings negative effect to apparentness and quality of fabrics.Sol-Gel method is a new textile functional finishing technology which is developing in recent years. During this paper, Sol-Gel technology is applied to knitted wool fabric for anti-pilling finishing. From the results, it was found that 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) sol could remarkably reduce pilling phenomenon of knitted wool fabric, but it usually needed high curing temperature (160℃) which will bring yellowing of the wool fabric. So methods for lowering curing temperature were primarily researched. Firstly, Titanium sol (Ti/Si hybrid sol), the pH gliding agents and diethylenetriamine (DETA) were added to the GPTMS sol, which could accelerate the GPTMS gelling rate. Secondly, the GPTMS sols with above additives were used to treat the knitted wool fabric for anti-pilling finishing. The test results indicated the GPTMS sol used FD gliding agents and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as additives could efficiently lower the curing temperature and prevent yellowing. But the results of Ti/Si hybrid sol and pH509 gliding agent were not obvious. Two recommended treating methods used in lower curing temperature (120℃) were given in this paper. The pilling grades of the knitted wool fabrics treated by the two recommended methods could reach 2.5~+ and 2.5. That meets the enterprise's request. And the yellowing index was 11.8% and 11.2%. No significant yellowing on appearance. Based on measuring the diameter and friction coefficient of treated and untreated wool fibers, the principle of anti-pilling by using sol-gel technology was explainedBesides above, anti-pilling finishing by using cross-linking agent for low twist knitted cotton fabric was also researched in this paper. Due to the strong damage to the strength of the knitted cotton fabric (bursting strength retention rate is 55%) by citric acid treated, main researching focus was on the application of SDP resin. The optimizing treating condition was selected from the results of the orthogonal experiment. The pilling grade of the fabric treated with the optimizing treating condition increased 1.0-1.5 degree and its bursting strength rate reached 60%-65%. Bursting strength retention rate would increase if use SDP resin combined with polyurethane (PU) or polyacrylate (PA). Experiments results also showed that the pills quantity of the treated knitted fabric by SDP resin was less than that of the untreated fabric during the whole Martindale testing process. The treated knitted cotton fabric had less color changes. The stress-strain curve of fabric treated with SDP crosslink agent showed that the breaking strength and elongation decreased, at the same time, the modulus increased. The strength fall caused by crosslink is due to the unequal distribution of molecular chains of fibers which made the fibers break easier during the friction process and not entangle with each other to form pills.
