The rational cutter geometry parameter is the cutter geometry parameter that can gain maximal tool life to reach better cutting efficiency and reduce the finished cost under the premise of keeping the processing quality. The various data indicate that the cutter geometry parameters (such as cutter angle , edge area pattern and parameters, the knife faces's pattern and the parameters , the edge shape etc.) affect cutting deformation , cutting force and cutting temperature, and then affect cutting efficacy , cutter's life , process mass and finished cost. For using cutter's cutting function more sufficiently, we should choose the the cutter geometry parameter rationally except selecting cutter material correctly.As a module part of the intelligent CAD system to optimize cutting tool's geometric parameters, the expert system is developed by CBR technology, expert system technology, dynamic link library and ADO technology. It adopts the data expression based on database technology, by the way of combinating the knowledge base and the database to get koowledge and data. By exchanging with the consumer, it realizes the optimization of cutter geometry parameters, and provides the optimum cutter geometry parameters to the drawing module. The expert system is constructed with Visual C++6.0 and the main knowledge base is constructed with SQL server. From speculating and optimizing the data got from actual working condition, it can get the best result and provide necessary data support for the generation of the 3D solid image and 2D drawing of each component and the assembly body of a cutting tool,and make the design process connects the actual working condition closely .The expert system can shorten design time , improve processing efficiency ,and prolong tool life to reach the best balance between efficiency and cost while keeping good process quality. This dissertation introduces the general configuration, functional modules and working flow of the intelligent CAD system, among which the optimization module for cutting tool geometric parameters - the Expert System for optimizing the geometric parameters of the cutting tool used on special machine tool, and the finite element analysis module are described in detail.By traditional approach for cutting tool's geometric parameters optimization, cutting tools with various geometric parameters are first ground, followed by a great deal of cutting tests and verification, then the cutting tool with reasonable geometric parameters is gained. This process often consumes a great deal of time and cost. The results obtained from the study will be helpful for reducing the period of traditional theoretical analysis and experiment. CBR technology, expert system, dynamic link library, ADO technology are employed to design and optimize the geometric parameters of the sigle or combination cutting tools used to machining hole. And the stress and strain of each cutting tool using finite element method based on cutting force prediction are analyzed (such as maximum deflection of boring bar). The plug-in module named COSMOSWorks in software Solidworks is applied to analyze and check the strength of combination cutting tools. Thus the generated graphics model of cutting tool is supplied with the optimal geometric parameters, and the essential information is supplied to optimize the structure design of cutting tools. Because the method is convenient and swift, the efficiency and reliability of the design and development for cutting tools will be greatly improved.The research indicates that by optimizing geometric parameters of cutting tools used on modular machine tools and analyzing them in special cutting conditions based on finite element, cutting tools' geometric angle and design parameters tend to be more reasonable and the valuable reference to the structure design and the use of the cutting tools, and the tool life of the cutting tools are improved. Therefore the expert system can make the design process for the geometric parameters of cutting tools used on modular machine tools be easier and more reasonable, and make the selections of the dimensions and cutting parameters more reasonable too. The generated 2D drawings and 3D solid images can meet the consumer's requirements better.
