The clamping system is a primary mechanism in the injection moulding machine , of which platens and tie bars are the most important parts . Platens are mainly used in fixing moulds ,tie bars ,toggle unit and so on ,whose structure and force condition are rather complex .Tie bars play an important role in connecting the front platen with the rear one . The stress within them is 5-6 times as much as that of specified value. As a result, tie bars are often wrecked because of fatigue ,which has brought about great losses in production .So improving the design of platens and tie bars is very important to the reliability and life of the machine .The current paper analyzed the key parts such as platens and tie bars in the clamping system using finite element method (FEM) according to the requirements of certain injection moulding machine factory of Shan Xi province. This study established 3D solid models of the front, the moving ,the rear platens and tie bars in object machine type by means of the Pro/E software . Then this key parts were analyzed through ANSYS software and the stress and displacement distributions were obtained; The main reasons to the parts fatigue were analyzed. Some scientific suggestions to improve the design of the clamping system were given . It is worth mentioning that the results from this paper is compatible with the practical condition, which shows this study is correct and reliable. It is helpful to the production .The clamping system is a complex and huge mechanism, however, the paper analyzed only platens and tie bars. The other parts such as toggle unit, crosshead etc. also influence the working condition of the machine .So this study is incomplete .Moreover ,the study is still gross in molding ,meshing ,loading and dealing with boundary conditions. It requires further division, which will be the future direction of research .
