This paper briefly describes theory, process and current status of the aluminium industry, introduces the problem of current efficiency of aluminium cell effected by the velocity fields. The paper describes many factors which effect the current efficiency in the aluminium cell and the mechanism of these factors effecting the current efficiency in the aluminium cell in detail. It also introduces some popular models of current efficiency. Two typic methods estimating the velocity field have been used:vortex-stream function method and unsteady Navier-Strokes equations method. In order to introduce the unsteady Navier-Strokes equations method particulariy,a time-dependent primitive variables numerical method for solving the natural convection and heat tranfer in an enclosure is studied as a example. The paper studies the velocity fields influencing on current efficiency using vortex-stream function method. The laminar flow model has been used in this mathematical calculation., The vortex-stream function method have been used to calculate the velocity fields of the electrolyte area under electromagnetism force in the aluminium cell, which programmed in Fortran language. We gained the distributing of concentration of aluminium and current efficiency in the aluminium cell under velocity fields .The result shows that the current efficiency of aluminium cell is largly decreased under the velocity fields. The current efficiency falls with parameter D and C ?AL increasing ,and parameter D effecting on current efficiency is more prominence than paramere C ?AL. With study the relation between the velocity fields and the current efficiency of the aluminium cell, this paper may provide some guidance for how to improve the current efficiency of the aluminium cell and designing the greater aluminium cell.
