Carbohydrates are essential for life as energy resources, as building blocks of DNA and RNA, and as constitutional parts of complex lipids and proteins. Therefore, carbohydrates exert a wide range of functions in living organisms, resulting in many Pharmaceuticals containing carbohydrate unit, for examples from many antibiotics to anticancer reagents. Since the wide distribution and importance of metals for life and the abundant weak donors of carbohydrates, study on metal-carbohydrate are interesting for understanding bioinorganic chemistry and exploring new pharmaceuticals.Five chiral amines (2-4, 7, 11) have been prepared from D-glucose, three of which are new compounds; Two Schiff base derived from carbohydrate amines (1, 5) have also been synthesized; Their complexes of Zn(â…¡), Cu(â…¡), and Pd(â…¡) have been isolated and fully characterized by IR, MS, elemental analyses, ~1H NMR and X-ray diffraction techniques. Inhibitory effects of the metal complexes synthesized on the cancer cell K562 and ASPC-1 have been tested using MTT assay. Their structure formulas are listed as follows:...
