Mainstream cigarette smoke (MSCS) is a very complex aerosol mixture of extreme chemical diversity. High-resolution qualitative studies employing multidimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry have recently revealed that MSCS consists of more than 30 000 compounds, the vast majority of which are considered to be very toxic or carcinogenic, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic amines.People pay more attention to the relationship between smoking and health since 1960s, and require more healthy tobacco products. Comprehensive, relatively simple, rapid, and accurate methods for the quantitative analysis of tobacco products become more and more important. On the basis of former studies, our research work for the deleterious compounds in cigarette and cigarette filter involved the following contents and achievements:1. A new method for determination of Benzo (a) Pyrene in mainstream cigarette smoke by GPC and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry was established. The samples were extracted ultrasonically with cyclohexane, purified by Gel Purify Chromatography and then determined by GC/MS. Linear range of 15.84~ 132.00ng/ml,the correlation coefficients of linear regression equation was 0.9990,the detection limit was 0.68ng/cigarette, and the recovery of the mothed was 91.11%.This method is suitable for quantitative analysis of Benzo (a) Pyrene in mainstream cigarette smoke.2. A method for the determination of aromatic amines (1-naphthylamine, 2-naphthylamine, 3-aminobiphenyl and 4-aminobiphenyl) in cigarette filter by solid phase extraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was studied. The samples were extracted ultrasonically with 5% hydrochloric acid solution and shaken with. The contents were extracted with dichloromethane, derivatized with pentafluoropropionic acid anhydride(PFPA) and trimethylamine(TMA), purified with a florisil column and quantitated by GC/MS. The detection limits of 1-naphthylamine, 2-naphthylamine, 3-aminobiphenyl and 4-aminobiphenyl are respectively 0.51,0.42,0.18 and 0.18ng/mL. The relative standard derivations of the four aromatic amines were below 3.02% and the recoveries ranged from 92.67% to 97.20%. This method was applied to determination of aromatic amines in cigarette filter and found that different materials of cigarette filter have different absorption rate for four aromatic amines in cigarette filter.3. Pyridine, quinoline and styrene in mainstream cigarette smoke were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The pyridine, quinoline and styrene in mainstream cigarette smoke were collected by Cambridge pad. The Cambridge pad was extracted with CH3OH, and quantified by GC/MS after filtrating 0.45μm filter. The linear range of the method was respectively 0.6-12.0μg/mL,0.2-6.0μg/mL and 0.1-0.8μg/mL,and the correlation coefficient was over 0.995.The detection limit was respectively 0.18ng/cig,0.03ng/cig and 0.03ng/cig.The relative standard deviation(RSD,%) was below2.5%and the recovery was between 92.2%~106.1%.This method was suitable for the determination of pyridine, quinoline and styrene in mainstream cigarette smoke.
