The appropriative drill press that used for drilling and trapping processing the stay ring of hydraulic turbine of right bank power station of the Three Gorges is researched in this paper. The appropriative drill press is the first domestic manufacturer, which fill the domestic drilling units installed in the attack M80x6 for drilling blank form, at the same time put an end to the Yangtze River Three Gorges generating unit installed equipment rely on imports for history, and makes contributions to the construction of the Three Gorges Project. Because the requirements of the progress of the project, the appropriative drill press is designed, manufactured in a very short time, the main components of size through analogy design by the light of experience and selected relatively large safety factor, so the equipment inevitably exist heavy, large, rough and other issues. The cross beam and spindle box of the appropriative drill press are research objects. With general finite analysis software ANSYS, the finite element analysis was carried out to analyze the cross beam and spindle box in this paper, then carrying out optimization design on its structure.A three-dimensional finite element of the cross beam and spindle box of the appropriative drill press have been established which based on accuracy model to made an analysis of static force of and display the stress and displacement distribution in three dimension; made a modal analysis of the cross beam and spindle box with FEM and get their inherent frequencies and mode shapes, then made dynamic characteristics analysis for these two structures in this paper. The results show that, the cross beam and spindle box can fairly fit its strength, the designing of the cross beam and spindle box is too conservative. The result can be applied for the theoretical basement in the structural optimal design and dynamic modification.In this paper the design parameters of ANSYS static analysis module from the perspective of cross beam, spindle box design optimization. The optimum design for cross beam and spindle box is used for reducing the structure's weight. The cross beam's quality reduced approximately 20% and the spindle box's quality reduced approximately 14%. Improve the structure in order to make it meet the assembly, processing and the practical requirements, and get the reasonable result to guarantees the appropriative drilling press's working accuracy.
