The coiler is very important equipment in rolling production-line, and is extensive used in strip steel and wire stock manufacture. The coiler's quality of design directly influence's the working ability of rolling mills. Designing coiler using traditional method makes workload added, design cycle longer, design cost higher, and selecting type of coiler lacks theoretical basis. The application of CAD/CAE/CAM is more and more extensive along with the development of computer technology. The concept of parameterization design is very popular, the combination of FEM and computer technology has offered solution method for some problems that traditional method can not solve.Rectangular-pyramid coiler and V-ledge coiler, two common types of coilers are analyzed and compared with FEM software ABAQUS in the head of this article. The rectangular-pyramid coiler has better working performance through analyses of calculation results. Then, type of coiler in this article is determined, and it refers reference to the following designing work.Secondly, projected dimension of coiler for 1100 reversing double stand rolling mill was determined through principal parameters calculation of rectangular-pyramid coiler. Solid model building for coiler's parts and dummy assembly were accomplished with Pro/E as platform, thus design accuracy can be sure.Finally, second development for main parts of rectangular-pyramid coiler were carried out with object oriented method on the platform of Visual C++6.0 and Pro/TOOLKIT of Pro/E. Then integration of coiler's design process was done and initially CAD/CAE integration has realized. This paper also gives an example of application of this system. Parameterization second development applied in this paper increases design efficiency and ensure design quality.
