Both alginate sodium and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium are natural polymers, which are biodegradable, compatible and widely available. Development of fiber with alginate sodium and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as raw material will not only widen the original source of textiles, but also provide us a kind of green and environment-friendly fiber. Hence the fiber has wide prospect of application. Composite fiber made of alginate sodium and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium are prepared, and the properties of the fiber were also investigated in this paper.Physical and chemical properties as well as the compatibility of alginate sodium and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium, the rheological behavior of spinning solution and the spinning technology were researched in this paper. And the micro-morphology, crystallization index and flame retardant property of the composite fiber were also studied. The important experimental results are listed as follows:1. Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium and alginate sodium are compatible to each other only when the content of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium varies from 5~15%. So the content of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium in the spinning solution should be less than 20%.2. The viscosity of alginate sodium is close to that of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium when the both concentration of solution are about 3.6%. The viscosity of alginate sodium is higher when the concentration of solution is lower than 3.6%, vice versa.3. Blended solution of alginate sodium and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium is a typical pseudoplastic fluid. The apparent viscosity of solution decreases with the increase of shear rate and temperature.4. The optimum preparing technique of the composite fiber of alginate sodium and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium is: content of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium =10%, coagulation concentration of calcium chloride=3.5%, coagulation temperature=40℃. Fiber spinned with the best technique possesses desirable properties, whose strength is 3.82cN/dtex and the absorption amount of distilled water is 1.82g/g. 5. The fracture mechanism and micro-morphology of the composite fiber is similar to that of viscose fiber, but it has lower crystallinity and higher flame-retardancy than viscose fibers.
