Folding cartons are low cost, facility to transport and use, also they are easy to recycle, so folding cartons are used widely in daily supplies such as foods, drugs, cosmetic, cigarettes,wine and so on.The folding cartons are maily used as sales packaging, so the designers concern the structure and decoration more. But its strength can not be neglected. First, Although folding cartons are not transport packaging containers, they should transport to the costomers. During the transportation, they need to endure the pressure the top carton gives. Second, As a rigid container, folding carton should have the ability to resist the distortion and damage, in order to protect the goods and display the goods. Third, studying the strength of folding cartons can use their strength to decrease the demand of the corrugated boxes outside. In this way can conserve resources and better for the environmental protection. So the compression strength is very important for folding cartons, studying it has much practical significance.This paper focuses maily on the compression strength of folding cartons. First, it studies the properties of the original materials of folding carton——the stiffness and ring crush compression resistance. Second, according to the classical laminated plate theory (CLT), it analyzes the deflection, bulking behaviour and post-bulking behaviour, and finds out the primary influence factors. The theoretical study indicates, the stiffness and ring crush compression resistance of the original materials, structure and structure parameter are the main factors that influence the compression strength. Then through the experiments, it sthdies how these factors influence the compression strength and if there are any interaction in these factors. Third, Through the analysis of the BRDA empirical formula, it make a discussion on the empirical formula of compressive strength of folding carton, which only concerns the effect of the properties of original materials. And according to experiment, deducing a formula which concerns the effect of both material properties and structure parameter. The analysis of experimental data using SAS software shows this empirical formula is more identical to the actually measured results.The result of this paper can give some experimental data and empirical equation to the study of compression strength of folding cartons, and has some practial value.
