Research On The Dyeing With Purple Cabbage Colors

Purple cabbage colors are a kind of natural colored material extracted from purple cabbage. They have high exploitation value because they possess some outstanding advantages such as vividness in color, richness in raw materials, reproduction property, eco-friendly and safe, and low cost. Purple cabbage contains a high content of colored materials, and its producing process is eco-friendly and the extraction of colored materials is simple. In addition, purple cabbage colors have certain stability to light, heat, oxidants and reducing agents. They can be obtained in the form of liquid and solid for the purposes of dyeing.At present, the colored materials extracted from vegetables and fruits are mainly applied in food-processing fields, but seldom exploited in textile dyeing fields. In this dissertation, The extracting methods of natural purple cabbage colors, the basic characteristics of extracted colors and two methods (direct dyeing and chrome dyeing) of their application to the dyeing of wool and silk were investigated. The optimum method of color extraction and the optimum dyeing parameters like the amount of colors, application temperature, pH values, etc were selected by orthogonal and single-factor tests.The experimental results showed that purple cabbage colors were relatively suitable for the dyeing of protein fibers. The violet, blue and green colors of dyed fabrics were obtained by direct dyeing, aluminium and iron mordant dyeing, respectively. The dyed fabrics exhibited genuine color effect, and good colorfastness except poor fastness to light.
