Engineering ceramics have satisfied the urgent requirement from the development of novel science and technology, as they are a series of materials with excellent performance in physical, chemical and mechanical capabilities. They have also been applied to lots of key implements in many industry fields. But due to the common characters of high hardness and brittleness, engineering ceramics are typical hard-machining materials. It becomes a big obstacle in application and development of engineering ceramics. Current machining methods, such as grinding, ultrasonic and laser, have the disadvantages of low efficiency and high cost. They can't meet the requirement from industry implements. The rapid development of engineering ceramics has an urgent need of new effective machining method. So that microwave energy application is combined to the machining process of ceramics in this paper. Fundamental research of microwave aided ductile machining is carried out to promote the engineering ceramics process techniques.Oriented in the applications of microwave aided ductile machining, different characters are discussed at first among grinding, special machining and ductile machining. The novel microwave aided machining method is introduced based on the review of machining method's development. Then, the slip system and shear intension theories are used in the research of ductile deforming. The transforming qualification and disciplinarian in the process of material heating are discussed, and temperature range inducing ductile deforming is achieved. Besides, the thermal properties of ceramics in microwave field are studied on the base of interacting theory between microwave and dielectrics. The formulas are also showed which describe dissipation power and temperature field. Meanwhile, coaxial cutting tool which is the key equipment of aided process is explained. Further more, numerical simulation and analysis of microwave aided machining process are carried out on the base of fundamental theories above. The calculated results are made up of some key parameters of electromagnetic and thermal field. The experimental machine of microwave aided tooling for ceramics is introduced at last.The paper is aimed at the art and the theory study of ceramics ductile removing in electromagnetic field. The research of this aspect will offer new theory and new method to ceramics machining. And it will also help to solve the machining difficulties of other hard and brittle materials, such as semiconductors and powder metallurgy materials. The novel microwave aided machining will definitely have a promising future.
