In this paper,super-absorbent multilayer fabrics for thermal protection are developed to open a new way of designing high-temperature protective clothing,in accordance with the principle of endothermic evaporation.The outer layer of this fabric is plain knitted with the flame-retardant viscose and fine denier polyester blended;the middle layer r is the non-woven fabric netted with mixed fibers of super-absorbent fibers and viscose fibers;the waterproof coated fabric equipped with the properties of water steam protection is selected as the inner layer.First of all,the basic properties of super-absorbent fibers are studied to prepare for non-woven fabrics.The experimental results show that this fiber with low breaking strength and small elongation at break possesses fast water-absorbent velocity,and there is only 15s to be saturated absorption rate,about 90 times.Then,each layer of the multilayer fabrics is decided according to the demands of thermal protection and the whole load of human body after the fabrics are all wet. Through the "oxygen index" test,the plain knitting fabric with 50/50 blending ratio is optimized as the outer layer;by comparison with "vapor bond" method,the "water adhesion" method is obtained for slightly high absorption rate to make the middle non-woven fabric with web ration of 80g/m~2 netted with 10%super-absorption fibers;and the inner layer is a nylon fabric PU-coated on one side with relatively poor air permeability and moisture evaporation.In the end,the super-absorbent multilayer fabrics are made to lap over each other in a manner of quilting.Tested through "water activation time "and" high-temperature water-retention capacity ",the developed fabrics are showed that its water-activated time is 15 seconds and the duration of high temperature is 15 minutes.Therefore,there is sufficient time to escape from a fire scene or perform a rescue before the human body feel pain during the multilayer fabrics reached the saturated absorption.
