The progress and development of drilling technology with Raise Boring Machines fundamentally solved the technically difficult problem of raise boring constructions in China's coal mining, hydropower, non-ferrous mining industries, which greatly accelerate the construction speed of shafts. The process of raise boring is to drill pilot hole to the lower tunnel, change the pilot hole bit to a reamer, then enlarge it from bottom to the top. Since some construction accidents may occur due to the geological conditions, equipment and its operation, affecting the quality and safety of construction, relevant research must be carried out. Particularly with the development of deep shaft raise boring machine with large diameter, the accidents may cause more losses, therefore it is much more necessary to study the issue.In this paper, firstly a detailed analysis of the accident reasons, phenomena in the accidents and the handling measures in raise borings is conducted. Based on the measurable and controllable factors of existing electro-hydraulic control system, the design concept of safety system is defined. In the design process, the safety system is designed by analyzing the characteristics of the hydraulic system and elertric-controlled system of new type electro-hydraulic controlled raise boring machines as well as the typical process of operational procedures. And also a scheme is put forward for the installation of sensors, signal processing, and rules for operating programme. Followed by the hydraulic system modeling, simulation tests to the model are conducted by using simulation software AMESim. Finally an industrial test is made to the safety system with traditional hydraulic operating raise boring machines and computer electro-hydraulic controlled raise boring machines.In conclusion, the safety system can be realized in type BMC200 and BMC400 raise boring machines. Industrial test in constructing ventilation shaft in coal mine shows that the safety system of raise boring machines is feasible and effective in new type electro-hydraulic controlled raise boring machines.
