CNC technology is the key of manufacturing automation. In traditional manufacturing mode, CNC equipments often operate independently without any collaboration. The production often includes lots of processes, so the products need to go through numerous CNC equipments. Operators are required to collaborate between them, not to mention controlling multiple equipments by one operator. If the machines were placed at different places, operators need to walk constantly to control them. The intensive work, low efficiency and poor reliability greatly limited the automation of manufacturing. It is necessary to connect the CNC devices into a network, remotely control their processing and collaboration, and ultimately achieve the full automation production mode.Following work is done to meet the requirements of CNC systems:1. Analyse a variety of network types and networking ways, select Profibus-DP as our measure, which has high realtime performance, high reliability and is widely used in the industrial network. We introduce it into an open CNC system based on "PC+Moving Controller".2. Profibus is in its embryonic stage in the application of CNC system though it has been widely used in other areas of automation. Profibus-DP is not specifical for a CNC system, so we propose further design and transformation based on its own characteristics. A set of network communication agreement is designed to meet the requirements of CNC system application.3. A network numerical control system based on the Profibus-DP is developed to control the laser engraving machine, robot arm and warehouse equipment, which needs mutual mission control and cooperation control. At the same time, remote video monitoring system is introduced to enable the operator to see real-time video of remote equipment and its moving, They constitute a model of flexible manufacturing systems, which completes the processing of fetching the raw materials from warehouse, processing on them by the CNC equipments, and restoring them back to the warehouse.4. Finally, summarize the paper and put forward some further study prospect.
