The beam pumping unit is the main lifting equipment of the sucker rod pumping system, and widely used in domestic and foreign oilfields because of its simple structure, reliable work and so on, which becomes a unique landscape of the oil cities. However, the traditional unit is too unified on appearance, monotone on color, it can meet the functional demand, often not well integrated into the surrounding environment, and should not adapt to its environment, not to mention landscaping environmant and enhancing the city cultural taste. Therefore, the improvement on the appearance of pumping unit has important practical significance.In this paper, the conventional beam pumping unit used the most widely is applied as an example, in the premise of ensuring the capability of the unit, the traditional Chinese culture elements are adopted as the basic design ideas, and the biomimetic design method in modern industrial design methods is applied to designing the improvement on apperance of pumping unit, the main design steps and completed work are as follows:Abstract and symbolic geometry are extracted from the four animal morphologys of bats, deer, turtles, magpies which are auspicious symbol "Fu" "Lu" "Shou" "Xi"of Chinese traditional culture, the conventional beam pumping unit (mainly the beam, part of horse head and stent) is designed to improve appearance. After the improvement program of the pumping unit is identified, the solid models of pumping units with new appearances are set up by the three-dimensional modeling software Solidworks, and a simulation exercise of pumping unit is conducted by Cosmos motion, the plug-ins of Solidworks. Matlab is used to program for the motion analysis of the pumping units with new appearance, the hanging point motion curve of the pumping unit and reduction gearbox crank output shaft torque curve are mapped respectively, and this laid a foundation for the follow-up kinetic analysis.Then three-dimensional solid models set up by Solidworks are imported into finite element analysis software Ansys which can join with Solidworks seamlessly and three-dimensional model rendering software 3DS Max, making use of Ansys analyses the beams and the stents of the improved pumping units by the method of the finite element analysis,and the model space sizes is modified on the basis of calculating results, and this ensures the mechanical properties and the used security of the improved pumping units. Finally, the effect rendering of improved Fu-type, Lu-type, Shou-type, Xi-type pumping units is completed by 3DS Max, on choosing the color of the pumping units, the traditional Chinese colors - yellow, black, blue , red, white are used to match in order to simulate the inherent color of the bionic animals;the warm tone is used on the four pumping units, in order to alleviate the visual indifference sense of the mechanical products and bring the psychological pleasure.
