In this work, two types of reactive anti-bacterial agent were synthesised. One type contains reactive silane couping agent, N-triethoxyl-silylpropyl-isothiazolin-3-one (agent 1) and N-(3-triethoxyl-silylpropyl)-thiobutyl- isothiazolin-3-one(agent 2). The other type contains reactive cyanuric chloride agent, 1,3 - 2 (N, N-dimethyl-12-amino-ethoxy) -cyanuric chloride (agent 3). Antibacterial agent were obtained by grafting silane coupling agent and reactive cyanuric chloride ,with synthetic isothiazolin-3-one and quaternary ammonium salt as the main antibacterial monomer. At the same time N-hydroxyethyl isothiazolin-3-one and 3-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-isothiazole were synthesized by isothiazolin-3-one. They were characterized by 1H-NMR, ESI-MS and IR. Accurately target products were synthesized. The Antibacterial performance of the cotton fabric treated with reactive antibacterial agent was tested .The results showed that when the dosage of the finishing agent were 20% owf ( on weight of fabric ), the antibacterial rates of agent 1 to Escherichia coli and Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach were 96.8% and 94.63% respectively, and were 86.79% and 85.73% after 30 washing cycles. The antibacterial rates of agent 2 to Escherichia coli and Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach were 95.92% and 95.75% respectively, and were 85.76% and 83.59% respectively after 30 washing cycles. The antibacterial rate of agent 3 to Escherichia coli and Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach were still 97.78% and 96.19% after adequate washing and that meant the finished fabrics had excellent washingfastness and antibacterial performance. The contents of sulfur and silicon were detected by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, thus the quantity of the immobilized antibacterial agents were determined. The results revealed that the treated fabric had excellent antibacterial performance and washing fastness. Furthermore, whiteness of the fabric remained basically unchanged, while the bursting strength was slightly increased without adverseeffect to the mechanical properties of the fabric. The results showed the antimicrobial agents were suitable for the antibacterial finishing of cotton fabrics. The results of qualitative antibacterial tests showed that the lowest concentrations of N-hydroxyethyl isothiazolin-3-one and 3-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-isothiazole to Escherichia coli and Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach were 0.0001 g/mL, 0.005g/mL respectively. Therefore, they are good intermediates for reactive antibacterial agents that may be used in future work.
