The numerical control machine tool is thought as key equipment of modern manufacturing industry. The output and technical level of numerical control machine tool represent the manufacturing industry level and competitive power. Vertical Machining Center is considered as a central manifest of numerical control technology. By researching the new products, the trend of high performance machining center can be known deeply, and the independent development ability can be improved.The structural configuration and technical parameter of VMC850 vertical machining center are introduced in this paper. The transmission system has been designed, and some critical components of VMC850 vertical machining such as column, bed, sliding seat, etc. are carried on analysis and structure optimization using finite element analysis software. Some simple dynamic models for machine tool are built, which can supply some theoretical preparations and instructions for examining the machine tool's dynamic characteristic. The main research contents of this article are as follows:(1)The layout and gross structure of mechanism are designed. The vertical machining center's entire distribution uses the fixed column type. The spindle box is hung in one side, and the weight-drop for keeping balance is laid aside in the column. The style of workbench is cross sliding table that can realize migration in X, Y coordinate. The spindle-box can move along the rail of column in Z coordinate.(2) The select process of VMC850 vertical machining center's transmission system unit is introduced according to actual conditions and the formulas of linear rail, ball screw, servo motor. This article selects the ball bearing linear rail. The linear rail is installed on the column in vertical arrangement, and it is also installed on the bed and sliding seat in level arrangement method. After the working conditions are set, the load of linear rail can be calculated. Finally, the safety coefficients and fixed service life must be controlled in permit scope. According to the use conditions and many other factors, the ball screw can be chosen. The ball screw of column is used in "fixed-free" form, and the ball screw of bed and sliding seat are used in "fixed-support" form. Usually, the rotational speed, torque, smallest feed quantity and many other factors must be considered, when choosing the motor of ball screw.(3) Some critical components of vertical machining such as column, bed, sliding seat, etc. are built in the form of three-dimensional model using software. Moreover, the gross structure, internal strengthening rib, section size can be optimized using the static analysis with the aid of the finite element analysis software. (4) It is proved that the VMC850 vertical machining center has high precision by the examination and the detection of test sample. It has achieved the technical requirements.
