This dissertation reviews the status and the process on treatment of the flocculant in dealing with wastewater both at home and abroad. Based on the current situation and existing problems, the detailed research progress is presented.Starch is a natural polymer of D-glucose containing amylase and amyloped. Because of cheap, renewable, non-toxic, biodegrade and compatible, it plays vital roles in the burgeoning biopolymers industries, in food, environmental management, pharmacy and textiles have been reported widely in the literature.A novel carboxymethyl-starch-graft-polyacrylamide-sodium xanthate (CMSAX) was synthesized by grafting copolymerization reactions of carboxymethyl starch (CMS), acrylamide (AM), and with CS2 as sulfonating agent, and potassium surpersulphate (KPS) as initiator and it has functions including weak acidic groups of removing high concentrations heavy metals ions from aqueous solution in short time for the CMSAX ease of solubility. Meanwhile the resulting of CMSAX had obvious good exhibition compared the starch-graft-polyacrylamide and polyacrymide in the flocculation and coagulation for the high concentration metal ions wastewater. The nano-composite copolymer of carboxymethyl starch-graft-acrylamide/crylic acid (AA) was prepared by the grafting copolymetization of acrylamide and acrylamide compounded whit nano-attapulgite (ATT) modified onto starch by chemical reaction in toluene. Utilizing CUSO4 and PbNO3 aqueous solution as model wastewater, the nano-composite flocculant was employed in the flocculation and coagulation for wastewater, which expressed good properties of removing Cu2+and Pb2+.The amphoteric flocculant of carboxymethyl starch-graft-polyacrylamide/dially-dimethyl (DMDAAC) ammonium chloride was synthesized by the resulting graft reaction through potassium surpersulphate (KPS) as initiator, while the resulting amphoteric flocculant was employed in the flocculation and coagulation for wastewater containing cyanide in the help under the copper ion. Meanwhile the cyanide was removed by the ion exchange reaction for quaternary ammonium ion in the flocculant. Flocculant is a natural biodegradable polymer, so the settlement can degrade by microorganism avoiding the secondary pollution.
